Studying at Fontys

How does your study time looks like at Fontys Engineering?

Courses

In the first year, your weeks consist of:

  • 20 hours of classes/theory/practicum
  • 10 hours of projects
  • 10 hours of self-study

As an student, you will work in 3 different themes

  • Health and well-being: Learn to develop the tools that help doctors and nurses provide a higher standard of care.
  • Sustainability and smart living: Save the world by creating technology that allows us to live within our means.
  • Intelligent Sound & Vision systems: Interaction with the world through common sensors we as human beings are familiar with (eyes and ears).

In your first year, you will start immediately by making useful devices. In making devices, you will learn the basic skills of an electrical engineer: how to make a circuit, how to recognize components, write software to control your hardware, and put everything on a printed circuit board for a professional outcome.

You’ll take courses such as analog design, digital design, software design, mathematics, and communication & system engineering techniques.

In your second year, you will create devices that integrate your deepening skills and the skills from other engineering disciplines. These multidisciplinary projects allow you to complete your basic electrical engineering skills, from signal processing and control, through to discrete circuits.

In the second year, you also choose your focus. Apart from the fundamentals, you can choose from a wide variety of skills and knowledge to learn. You can suggest your own skills that you want to learn.

In the third year, you put your knowledge into practice. You do this by means of an internship. You also choose a minor in the third year, which will allow you to deepen or broaden your education.

Internship

One half of the third academic year, you’ll spend 20 weeks doing an internship. This is the perfect opportunity for you to put into practice what you have learned during your study programme. You’re really entering the job market! You’ll complete an internship at a company in the Netherlands or abroad. Of course, we will assist you in choosing your internship.

Minor

One half of this academic year, you’ll follow a minor programme. All Fontys full-time bachelor’s degree programmes consist of a major and a minor. The major is the core of the programme and serves as your main study field, whereas your minor is an elective programme of one semester.

The minor is a choice programme of 1 semester. As a full-time student, you can choose for a broadening Fontys minor in any study field. Or choose a minor offered by Electrical & Electronic Engineering, for example related to Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering. Even minors outside Fontys and abroad are possible. The choice is yours!

From the third academic year onwards, you’ll specialise in several ways to focus on your specific interests.

In your final year of study, you’ll take courses that match your chosen major. You’ll work towards your graduation for six months. Together with a company and your graduation supervisor, you’ll formulate an assignment and write a report on your findings. A graduation assignment is often the ultimate step towards a job.
