Your study programme

Get a good impression of what your study programme will look like.

What will you learn?

One day you are working on the embedded software of a self-driving car. The next day you are working together with fellow students on a cloud solution for a large international company. After you have mastered the technical basics, you will choose a specialisation.

Information technology students
  • Develop critical IT skills through a balanced mix of theory and practice.

  • Collaborate with diverse professionals, gaining a head start in the business field.

  • Focus on informatics, software engineering, data science, AI, cyber security or embedded systems.

Structure for the next four years

The programme starts with a foundation phase of three semesters in which you learn programming, developing an app and more. You choose a specialisation: Software Engineering, Business Informatics, Data Science, AI, Cyber Security or Embedded Systems.

Foundation phase 1

You will learn writing and testing code, designing software, setting up a database, and building an app.You will soon know a lot more about search and sort algorithms, how to use Google and ChatGPT in a professional way and more.

As an information technology specialist, you work on projects together with a team. In year 1, you will work on enhancing social skills through hands-on projects like developing a web application and a business application. Will you develop a CRM tool or webshop with your fellow students?

Deepen

Starting with semester 4, you'll deepen your theoretical knowledge and skills with advanced courses in your chosen field. Subjects include business management, concurrent programming, data warehouses, algorithms & data structures, management information systems, and programming in C/C++.

You can choose between 5 different specialisations:

  • Business Informatics, focusing on understanding business processes and organizing the IT for an organization
  • Data Science / AI, focusing on topics like Data Mining, Machine Learning, Neural Networks
  • Embedded Systems, focusing on communication between software and hardware, so controlling sensors of machines
  • Advanced Software Concepts, learning about front-end systems, operating systems, different types of database systems
  • Cyber Security, learning about hacking and defending technologies and about the tasks of a security officer.

Internship & minor

In the first semester of year 3, you'll gain hands-on experience through a work placement in a company and organisation of your choice, anywhere in the world. In the second semester, you'll expand your knowledge with a minor programme. Choose to study this minor at Fontys, one of our partner universities in the Netherlands, or one of 125 partner universities abroad.

Graduation

In your final year of Information Technology at Fontys Venlo, you'll tackle the main project: 'the Software Factory', developing market-ready software with partner companies. You can enhance your professional skills by choosing elective specialisations.

In the last semester, you'll complete another practical work placement. When you have finished all parts of the programme, you'll have earned an internationally recognised Bachelor of Science degree.
