Everybody has talents. Fontys helps students discover where their talents lie and teaches them how to profile themselves in their field within their professional education. Development and quality are the core concepts here.

With Talent Oriented Education, we respond, as our Fontys for Society strategy describes, to the changing and increasingly complex challenges within our society.

Fontys therefore helps students discover where their talents lie and how they can profile themselves in their field through their education—as a specialist, generalist, or any combination thereof. Every talent counts. With a solid foundation in content expertise, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work on complex and multidisciplinary issues.

We teach our students to take ownership of their learning and reflect on the choices they make. In our learning environment, everyone can find their own path, tailored to their individual needs and capabilities. Learning can take place anytime and anywhere. Cross-border learning, thinking, and working is second nature to our students—and to our staff.

By 2027, we aim for Talent Oriented Education to be a standard for everyone who is directly or indirectly connected to Fontys.

Fontys principles for learning
To shape our education, we have established five principles for learning:
  • We work with learning outcomes, organized into task areas that are recognizable within the professional field.
  • These task areas form units of learning outcomes worth 15 or 30 credits. This allows students to demonstrate their learning over a longer period of time.
  • Fontys programs with the same national professional or educational profile align their learning outcomes and their grouping into units of study. This enables students to take full advantage of Fontys' diverse learning contexts.
  • Bachelor’s programs include a 30-credit elective (minor) space in the post-propaedeutic phase, which students can fill freely, both within and outside Fontys.
  • Bachelor’s programs consist of only a propaedeutic year and post-propaedeutic phase, whereas Associate degree and Master’s programs have a single learning phase.
  • Authentic professional practice is at the heart of our education: students learn and work in real-world professional settings or learning environments that closely resemble them.
  • Working on authentic (societal) challenges together with students, teachers, researchers, and industry professionals from various fields is embedded in the learning outcomes.

      • Collaborative learning, working, and research are integral to the learning outcomes.
      • Educational activities consist of a well-thought-out blend of online and face-to-face learning, which reinforce each other.

            • Each student is supported by a student coach in making informed decisions and taking ownership of their personal learning pathway.
            • Each student has a dynamic study plan outlining how their learning process takes shape.
            • Each student builds a portfolio demonstrating that learning outcomes have been achieved.
            • Feedback plays a central role: students learn from constructive feedback to take the next step in their development.
            • Students have the freedom to provide their own evidence of learning outcomes, in addition to any required material.

            • Each program offers a facilitated learning pathway, in which assessment and educational activities are aligned with learning outcomes.
            • All programs adhere to the Fontys-wide framework for assessment quality.
            • Educational activities are offered per semester in two units of 15 credits (consecutive or parallel) or one unit of 30 credits.
            • Fontys operates using institution-wide standardized processes and systems.
