Course description

Over the 21st century we have witnessed rapid internationalization and globalization of business and the rise of multinational corporations. What was the role of the states in fostering these developments? And how do we prevent multinational companies from violating basic human rights, causing environmental damage, monopolizing the markets and fostering inequality?


In this course you learn about the growing role of regulation and law in international business. In particular, you learn about legal vehicles which promote international business, including corporate structures, contracts and IP rights. You also learn about the role of law in preventing international business from causing harm to the markets and society.
This course enables students to conduct a basic analysis of the legal environment for doing business and to identify opportunities provided by the law and the limits it creates.

Competences and learning objectives

After the course you can:

  • Use basic legal terminology to familiarize herself with texts related to the legal environment for international business and communicate to the lawyers and other stakeholders on legal matters;
  • Recognize the role of law in international business and the interplay between law, business and society;
  • Recognize the national nature of the law and the challenges it creates for international business;
