Applied Physics

Your study programme

Get a good impression of what your study programme will look like.

What will you learn?

You will discover the fundamentals of physics through experimentation, collaboration, and learning both theoretically and practically. Through practicals, projects, and internships, you will develop the skills needed to create sustainable energy solutions or medical technologies.

  • A balanced mix of practical work, theory, group work, and self-study

  • Explore topics like heat, light, motion, and electricity

  • Attend courses such as differential calculus, atomic and nuclear physics and programming

What will the next 4 years look like?

Your program consists of a propedeutical -and a main phase. In your first year, you’ll learn essential skills and connect with companies. The three-year main phase focuses on skill development, practical experience, a free program and graduation.

Ideal week:

  • 20 hrs classes (theory & practice)
  • 10 hrs project work
  • 10 hrs self-study (partially guided).

Propeduetical phase

Your first year of Applied Physics focuses on the fundamentals. Each semester, you will follow a central theme with the research cycle as the common thread. Within these themes, you will also take several mathematics and physics courses. Additionally, you will work on experiments and projects where you apply the knowledge you have gained in practical settings.

Main phase

You build on the knowledge and skills gained in your first year while continuing to apply the research cycle. You will deepen your understanding through courses on 'waves in light and sound', 'smart materials', 'measurement and data processing', and 'transport physics'. You will also specialize further by selecting your own projects, primarily sourced from the business world and partially from our research group.

Internship

Internship

In the first semester, you will complete an internship at a company or research institute, guided by a lecturer. Whether a large or small company, in the Netherlands or abroad, everything is possible. Together, we will find the best match.

Specialization

In the second semester, you will specialize in at least two areas of physics, such as photonics, solid-state physics, or data analysis, exploring topics that interest you.

Graduation

Free program

During your free program, you can take a minor either at Fontys or at another (international) institution. You also have the option to do another internship or pursue a pre-master's program. The choice is yours.

Graduation

You will select a graduation project that aligns with your interests at a company, research institute, or hospital of your choice.

Student experiences

I want to understand how things work.

Lena

Applied Physics student

I want to understand how things work and how I can apply that knowledge to solve problems. I’m a down-to-earth person, not someone who is abstract or theoretical. That’s why I prefer to work with concrete things, preferably with my hands.

Studying physics opens doors to countless opportunities.

Thomas

Applied Physics student

When I discovered that physics is present in every aspect of life, it was an eye-opener. Studying physics would open doors to countless opportunities. Physics shapes many things around us, often without us even noticing.
