An engineer is an optimist: Impossible problem? No way, I’ll fix it!

Thomas

Teacher

I work as a mathematics lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering programme. Additionally, I am also a student couch. This means I help guide students through their programme. Students can come to me if they need advice, are feeling down, or just need a listening ear. And, of course, they can also come to me with any questions they might have about my classes or their homework!

I have been working at Fontys Engineering since February 2004. After my previous job in the corporate sector, I wanted to explore teaching at different schools in secondary and higher education to see if a career as a teacher was the right fit for me. I had always thought that, sooner or later, I would become a teacher. Through a mutual acquaintance, I was introduced to Fontys Engineering. I spent a day shadowing a lecturer and the team leader asked if I could cover a few Monday morning lectures as a substitute teacher. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to continue as a lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering programme. I love that I can structure my lessons in a way that perfectly aligns with what students already know and are capable of.

I hope that Mechanical Engineering graduates feel like they truly are problem-solvers. An engineer is an optimist: “Impossible problem? No way, I’ll fix it!” As an engineer, you have the ability to create new, creative solutions to the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Are you considering studying Mechanical Engineering? It’s totally worth it!

Alex

Student

I’m a first-year Mechanical Engineering student, and I love the programme. I came to study in the Netherlands on my father’s recommendation. He encouraged me to seek new challenges here. I’ve always been fascinated by technology. Growing up, I enjoyed watching my dad work on projects, which inspired me to pursue this field. I haven’t done an internship yet, but when the time comes, I’d love to work at a company that makes a positive impact on society. My advice for students considering studying abroad is to do thorough research. And also, are you considering studying Mechanical Engineering? It’s totally worth it!
