Do you like mechanics, robotics, or production equipment? Do you have a knack for creative problem solving? Do you enjoy technical and engineering activities? Mechatronics is the study programme for you! In a world where technology develops faster than ever, you need to know how to stay flexible. As a mechatronic engineer, you’ll help building a faster, more precise and accurate future.

About Mechatronics

Robotics is developing at a rapid pace. This requires an always up-to-date educational programme that fits in with the fourth industrial revolution. We train you to be a specialist in the systematic design of control techniques for robot-controlled products and machines. Interesting theory lessons will be alternated with developing your technical skills in practice and carrying out projects in which you create innovative products.

Why study Mechatronics at Fontys?

  • Projects with assignments from the business world
  • Work together with students from different studies, such as Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Electronic Engineering in Eindhoven or Industrial Design Engineering in Venlo
  • You will be personally guided by our small team of teachers who put your passion first
  • Immerse yourself in the Brainport (Eindhoven) or Greenport (Venlo) region of the Netherlands
  • Your study supervisor helps you to develop research skills, subject expertise and creativity.
What is the difference between a university of applied sciences and a research university?

What are your going to learn?

As a mechatronic engineer, you are able to work in different teams and dynamics. You will know both mechanical, software and electrical engineering fundamentals. Collaborating in international and/or multidisciplinary teams comes natural to you! You’re a logical thinker. You think about how to make equipment safer or more user-friendly and design it accordingly – think for example of an automated car wash, a smart production robot, or an advanced automated guided vehicle. Mechatronics is essential for modern society. There’s a great need for well-trained mechatronic engineers.

How does your week look?

Studying is hard work. That’s okay, as long as there’s variety in what you do. At Mechatronics, we’ve got you covered:

  • One time you're following a class in one of our labs
  • The next moment you’re working on a robot or simulation
  • You work on projects in collaboration with a company
  • Always together with your fellow students and/or under the guidance of our teachers.

Courses

Mechatronics in Eindhoven focuses on high-tech systems and robotics. The programme is characterised by the opportunities to collaborate with companies in the high-tech Brainport region. The Engineering programmes have a brand-new location at the TU/e site with labs that are equipped in line with the latest developments.

Study at Fontys Engineering in 4 years!

How does your study time looks like at Fontys University of Applied Sciences, School of Engineering

Already in the first year, you start putting theoretical knowledge into practice by running projects. In order to realise a product, for example a robot, you combine subjects like:

  • Mechatronic design
  • Electrical networks
  • Mechanics
  • Digital design
  • C-programming
  • Mathematics
  • Integrated design techniques
  • General engineering skills
  • Communication and presentation techniques

You’ll have around 25 classes a week. The learned theory and acquired skills are immediately used in laboratory work and projects. First-year projects are typically based on gamification: principles and techniques on how to improve teamwork and learning how to do projects.

From year 2, you start to expand your knowledge and skills. This is the core phase of the programme. You’ll also start working on projects with students from other Engineering disciplines, such as Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Project-based learning has a strong relationship with the subject-specific courses. The projects are all connected to real-time assignments from the industry.

In the first semester of year 3, you’ll work and study at a mechatronics-related company: your first internship. You’ll be involved in mechatronics assignments of a university level.

In the second semester, you’ll follow your minor programme and study subjects related to your major mechatronics. You also have the option to choose subjects that are not related to your major (e.g. Business Engineering). Fontys will help you find a minor that suits your interests best.

In the final year of your bachelor’s programme, the first semester will be focused on a specialisation: robotics or control systems.

In the second semester, you’ll work on your final graduation project. You'll work for a company while writing your bachelor thesis.

The Mechatronics programme at Fontys in Venlo offers a unique focus on sustainability and energy transition. The campus is strategically located in the Greenport region, adjacent to the international Ruhr area, providing you as a student with access to the latest developments in green technologies and sustainable practices. Our project-based education programme will allow you the freedom to specialise in subjects of your own choice. The multi-disciplinary projects together with our study programme in Industrial Design Engineering will further allow you to apply the knowledge and skills that you acquire in the classroom to solve real-world problems.

In the first year you will gain experience in a lot of subjects in the field of Mechatronics. Subjects like:

  • Mathematics for Engineers
  • Measurement & Control
  • Mechatronic Design Skills
  • Mechanics
  • Applied Sensor Technology
  • Electrical Circuits
  • Software Design and Realisation

Next to this a big part of your first year you will be working together with your fellow students on several projects. You will have around 14 class hours a week and 12 project hours. Around 70% of your study programme will be spent working on your practical skills in projects. In the second year you will gain a deeper knowledge in the three disciplines of mechatronics (mechanical, software and electrical engineering) and how to combine them in projects.

In the third year students have to opportunity to study for 1 semester in another university anywhere in the world (‘Minor Semester’) and to work in a company on an internship for another semester.
In the fourth and final year of the programme, students will experience both on-campus and off-campus learning. The year is divided into two semesters: the first is an on-campus semester, and the second is a semester-long graduation project that takes place off-campus in a company.

Collection will occur in a maximum of ten equal instalments on or around the 26th of the month. Depending upon the processing time required after your enrolment, the direct debit may need to be moved to the following month. If so, the amount outstanding will then be divided and added to the remaining instalments to be executed until and including the June instalment.

If paying the full sum in a single payment

If you commence your studies on 1 September, the direct debit pertaining to your Tuition Fees will be executed on or around 25 September. If you commence your studies after 1 September, the direct debit will be executed on or around the 26th of the month in which you commence your studies.

              Non-EU students

Incoming non-EU students will receive a payment letter from their study department, which must be paid before the deadline. In the following academic years, payment can be made by direct debit.

              Non-SEPA

If you have a Bank account number of which the bank is not situated in one of the SEPA countries, and you are a national of a country outside the EEA without an address in The Netherlands, then you will receive a payment letter from Fontys via your course department.

The Dutch currency unit is the Euro (i.e. abbreviated to ‘EUR’ or ‘€’).

The average living expenses per month for a foreign student living and studying in Holland are between EUR 1,100 and EUR 1,500 per month. These living expenses cover rent, insurance, food, public transportation, books, clothing and other general costs.

Dutch Immigration Service (IND) requires non-EEA students to proof they have access to € 14.641 per year (€ 7.320 per semester)

Costs within the first months upon arrival will be higher than all other months due to a housing deposit, intro week and books. Study books are usually bought at the start of the semester and therefore it is wise to reserve and have direct access to an amount at the start of the semester which can cover the price of all study books and the living expenses for the first two months.

Before starting your study at Fontys, you must find suitable housing. Unfortunately, it is not easy for international students to find accommodation in the Netherlands due to the housing crisis. Start your accommodation search early. Please be aware that finding a place to live is your own responsibility. However, we are happy to assist in any way we can.
