Do you have a passion for the technical professions in healthcare? Do you like to interact with other people? Do you have good communication skills? Then Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy may be the course for you. In this programme, you will learn everything about medical imaging in radio-diagnostics, radiotherapy, ultrasound and nuclear medicine.

About the programme

The bachelor’s programme Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (MIRT) is a 4-year, full-time programme. In these 4 years, you’ll learn how to use medical equipment in order to prepare, execute and process visual imaging research and treatment. You’ll be trained as the professional link between technology, safety and patient care. The programme covers how the human body functions, which examination you can perform when presented with a clinical case, which equipment you should use for diagnoses or treatments and how these devices work. We’ll teach you the effects of radiation and radioactivity on the human body and how you can protect yourself and your patient against these effects.

Why the MIRT programme at Fontys?

  • The programme offers good balance between practical and theoretical study with a strong emphasis on practical work.
  • We offer excellent studying facilities and the classes are small, which provides a supportive and motivating learning environment.
  • You work with real patients, so that you get the needed work experience to become a well-rounded professional.
What is the difference between a university of applied sciences and a research university?

What are you going to learn?

You will learn to use medical equipment to prepare, perform and process imaging studies and treatments. You are a link between technology, safety and patient care. You will learn how the human body works, which examinations go with which disease, which equipment is needed and how this equipment works.

You learn:

  • All about radiation and radioactivity and how to protect yourself against it.
  • Working with advanced equipment for medical imaging.
  • Combination of theory and practice: learning by doing.

Due to the technical nature of the course, it’s important that you’re sufficiently proficient in advanced mathematics and physics (see 'Requirements' below).

What does your week look like?

  • You’ll attend classes for 20 hours a week, alongside 4 hours of project work and approximately 16 hours of self-study.
  • The course programme is divided into 40% theory, 40% practical work and 20% independent learning.
  • One academic year is made up of 4 periods, each lasting 10 weeks.

You will receive a lot of study supervision, particularly in the first year. You will be part of an allocated principal group, with 12 fellow students.

Courses

The programme has a duration of four years.
The first year serves as an orientation on the complete (4-year) programme and focuses on the responsibilities and tasks you’ll be performing as a Medical Imaging & Radiotherapy professional. Additionally, this year will give you the opportunity to find out whether this course is the right fit for you. You’ll also be working together with students in other paramedical training programmes.
In year 2, you’ll dig deeper into more complex diagnostic modalities and advanced medical imaging devices such as CT, MRI, SPECT. You’ll also learn how to make complex schedules and plans for radiation treatment. Halfway through this second year, you’ll decide on a profile theme to personalise the third and fourth year of the programme. At the end of the second year, you’ll also select a specific type of examination and treatment within the domain of a Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy professional.
You’ll kick off year 3 by exploring the profile theme you chose in the second year. Half of this year will be spent on a 20-week internship at one of the Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy workplaces. The other half of year 3 will be dedicated to a minor. You can choose a minor linked to your profile theme –Fontys offers you a unique opportunity to enrol in a profiling Minor, focusing on one specific healthcare theme and shaping the programme to complement your personal preference. This supports your development towards being a future-proof healthcare professional, while at the same time building a broad network. Of course, you can also enrol in a Minor programme at another University of Applied Sciences outside Fontys, at a University of Applied Sciences abroad, or within a different Fontys programme.
Year 4 will be dedicated to completing another 20-week internship within one of the Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy arenas. You’ll conduct an individual graduation research project aligned with your profile theme as chosen in year 2.

The hospital internships are done in the first year and are a fixed part of the programme.

  • In year 1 and 2, you will engage in short orientation internships.
  • Year 3 includes the Minor with a 5-month internship.
  • In year 4, you’ll combine your graduation internship with your graduation research project.

The amount to be paid may vary in accordance with the following situations:

                • If you have enrolled in more than one course programme (at Fontys and/or elsewhere), it is possible that you may only be obliged to pay one set of statutory tuition fees.
                • If you believe that you may be eligible to pay only the statutory tuition fees on the basis of information that may be unknown to us, please report this to your Course Department.

Collection will occur in a maximum of ten equal instalments on or around the 26th of the month. Depending upon the processing time required after your enrolment, the direct debit may need to be moved to the following month. If so, the amount outstanding will then be divided and added to the remaining instalments to be executed until and including the June instalment.

If paying the full sum in a single payment

If you commence your studies on 1 September, the direct debit pertaining to your Tuition Fees will be executed on or around 25 September. The average living expenses per month for a foreign student living and studying in Holland are between EUR 1,100 and EUR 1,500 per month. These living expenses cover rent, insurance, food, public transportation, books, clothing and other general costs.

Dutch Immigration Service (IND) requires non-EEA students to proof they have access to € 14.641 per year (€ 7.320 per semester)

Costs within the first months upon arrival will be higher than all other months due to a housing deposit, intro week and books. Study books are usually bought at the start of the semester and therefore it is wise to reserve and have direct access to an amount at the start of the semester which can cover the price of all study books and the living expenses for the first two months.
