The Participation Centre offers various professionalisation courses in which you can gain basic knowledge as well as work on different skills. Broadly speaking, we distinguish six skills that are important for the quality of co-determination and participation:
Level skill
The ability to connect with discussion and collaboration partners at different levels and from different backgrounds, creating a positive/constructive relationship and an atmosphere of trust.
Collaboration
The ability to work effectively toward a common goal, making the most of everyone's input and qualities.
Networking
Establishing and maintaining contacts with people within and outside the organisation who are relevant to achieving the goals of the organisation, council, committee or association.
Organisational sensivity
Having insight into how the organisation works and what is going on at different levels. Recognising the role, position and interrelationships of the various players in the organisation. The ability to properly determine how to act optimally in this respect, considering your own role and goals.
Decision-making
The ability to get to the heart of an issue and see connections between the constituent parts and the bigger picture. (separating main and secondary issues) The ability to form well-reasoned judgments based on available information. (distinguishing facts from opinions) Arriving at informed decisions as a group that benefit individuals, the organisation and society. (weighing different opinions in the group and different interests)
Conversational skills
Having insight into the intention and purpose of mutual communication (informing, persuading, holding a dialogue) and the ability to consciously adjust your attitude and behaviour accordingly. Maintaining a dialogue In conversation with another person, exploring an underlying question or theme by listening attentively, sharing experiences and reflecting on insights.

Sign up for individual training or training with your council or committee through the Participation Centre: cvm@fontys.nl.
At this time, we do not have standard offerings in English for our international students. However, we can look together at what skill you want to improve yourself in and then see what fits. You can also attend a tailor-made training course as a council or committee (with or without an interlocutor). Together we will see what is possible! Send an email to cvm@fontys.nl.
